The MAL Group’s business interests were founded by Late MAL Alagappa Chettiar, who had the vision to harness India’s strong growth potential post-independence by establishing various industries. The 2nd Generation driven by brothers, AL. Muthiah and AL. Annamalai steered the founder’s vision and grew business that battled the thick and thin and built a legacy of its own that is well respected for its transparency and dependability. Our History
The group founder Late MAL Alagappa Chettiar was traditionally from the banking business, but ventured into the manufacturing of handloom cotton sarees. Success inspired him to expand into the manufacturing of silk sarees and fabrics by setting up Chamundi Silks. With his vision to expand the silk business, he sent his son AL. Muthiah and his daughter-in-law Valli Muthiah, to Japan to study and work in order to receive valuable training in the silk industry. The couple later returned to India bringing back a wealth of experience and technology to expand the company.
Having succeeded with Chamundi, the family’s next vision was to enter different industries, aiming for backward integration through establishing supporting lines of business. He sent his younger son AL. Annamalai to Japan to study and train in packaging. AL. Annamalai returned to India to help setup and grow India Packaging Products, a company specializing in manufacturing of corrugated board packaging. The brothers grew the businesses to what it is today and also expanded into new areas during their tenure.
Gappan Annamalai is now the 3rd generation in the business. He studied Finance and Economics in the US and returned to India to work in corporate for a few years. He was associated with reputed companies like GE, Genpact and Aol. Later, he set up various start-up companies in the areas of Consulting, Technology and Travel. Today, while he continues to grow his ventures, he is also helping the family manage the portfolio of companies.
Both AL. Muthiah and AL. Annamalai are highly respected in their industries and social circle. AL. Muthiah has won multiple awards for his management skills and has also won a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the Indian Silk Industry. AL. Annamalai has also won multiple awards for management in addition to a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the Packing Industry. He has served as the President of the Federation of Box Manufacturers Association of India. Today the two brothers are sharing their experiences to mentor Gappan Annamalai in realizing his ambition of expanding the business, reaching new heights and exploring emerging sectors.
